Are there food restrictions with Invisalign?

Invisalign Sterling HeightsInvisalign is an orthodontic treatment option that has multiple advantages over traditional teeth straightening methods … with one of the primary advantages being able to enjoy all your favorite foods throughout treatment.

Advantages with Invisalign

Aesthetics: Invisalign aligners are clear making this orthodontic treatment option virtually invisible.

Comfortable: The aligners are made from a material strong enough to shift teeth as needed, but without wires or metal brackets to abrade soft oral tissues.

Removable: Perhaps this is the biggest advantage of all. Patients undergoing teeth straightening with Invisalign simply remove the aligners before snacking or meals, replacing immediately when done. There are no food limitations.

Another positive aspect to removing aligners is that patients can maintain great oral health throughout treatment without any barriers to daily brushing and flossing.

Convenient: With traditional braces, the teeth moving process relies on dental visits to have wires manipulated. With Invisalign, the patient is able to keep advancing the straightening process by simply replacing the aligners as designated about every two weeks.

The Invisalign Process

Dental x-rays, photographs, and impressions are standard for most orthodontic treatment. But all similarities stop there with Invisalign.

A series of aligners are designed to keep teeth moving to their correct occlusion with the patient being responsible for replacing them as prescribed and, just as importantly, wearing them 20 to 22 hours every day. You can anticipate seeing changes within a few weeks; the length of time for your program will depend on the severity of your malocclusion.

With each new aligner, you know changes are taking place. A snug feeling at first is expected, and as teeth shift toward your corrected bite, you know the aligners are doing their job.

You will check in with your dentist every four to six weeks for a progress evaluation, and to make sure everything is moving along as designed.

At the conclusion of the teeth straightening portion of your treatment plan, you will be provided with a retainer. Follow instructions and wear as directed. Wearing the retainer is an important step in keeping teeth in place. Failure to wear it may allow teeth to drift back to their original placement.

Brush and floss daily; visit our team at Forever Young Dentistry for cleanings and exams throughout Invisalign treatment; and enjoy your beautiful new smile designed to last a lifetime.
