Are You A Good Candidate For Veneers?

  • March 29, 2016

Have you ever worn fake fingernails? If you have, then you know they can instantly transform how your hands look.

You were probably trying to cover something up, such as nails that were chipped or cracked.

There is a drawback, however. Fake nails are not a permanent solution to your nail problem. Then again, you can regrow your nails, so maybe you only have a temporary problem that you are trying to hide.

At Forever Young Dentistry, we offer a similar service for your teeth, only this is a more permanent solution.

They are called veneers, and they are one of the most useful services available in cosmetic dentistry. At our dentist office in Sterling Heights, we recommend porcelain veneers for our patients. Keep reading to find out why.

Why Porcelain?

First and foremost, we need to explain that veneers are thin shells that are specially designed to fit over your teeth. These hide the things you may not like about your teeth while presenting a better smile to the world.

We prefer porcelain for a few reasons.

First, porcelain looks like real teeth. Porcelain also reflects light in a similar way to natural teeth.

Second, porcelain is stain-resistant. Veneers made of resin are more likely to change color.

And third, porcelain is strong. If you are putting something in place of your teeth, it needs to be durable, too. This is why porcelain is also used to make dental crowns and bridges for people who have missing or lost teeth.

Could Veneers Improve Your Smile?

One of the other reasons we like porcelain veneers is because they can help so many patients.

If you have a mirror nearby, look at your smile. Take a note or just think of what you would change if you could. Then, see if any of the things on your list are on the list below.

Who can veneers help? Any of the following:

  • People With Crowded Teeth

Teeth crowding can occur when your adult teeth first erupt, or it can happen if your wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to erupt correctly.

In either case, having teeth that are pushed together does affect your smile. Your teeth may get turned sideways or overlap one another.

With veneers, your teeth can appear to be parallel to one another instead of pressed together.

  • People With Gaps In Their Teeth

If you have extra space or spaces between some of your teeth, this can make you self-conscious about your smile. Madonna may not mind the gap in her teeth, but that doesn’t mean you feel the same way.

You can close that space and present a very different smile with the addition of a set of porcelain veneers.

  • People With Discolored Teeth

Yellow teeth can occur because of tobacco use, coffee consumptions, or a taste for too much tea. Sugary soft drinks also can cause stains.

Poor oral hygiene can be a factor as well. Tooth decay can make your teeth take a turn for the worse.

If your enamel is worn down, it could reveal more of the yellower dentin below the surface. Yellowing also may be a side effect of certain medications.

No matter the reason, veneers can cover up the yellow, dark, or discolored parts of your teeth, and veneers can replace it with a smile that is bright and white.

  • People With Misshapen Teeth

One or two teeth that look short can affect the overall appearance of your smile. People are drawn to things that look out of place, and a misshapen tooth may command more attention than you would like.

Veneers could provide you with a way to present a more uniform appearance to your smile.

  • People With Chipped Teeth

This is very similar to the situation above. A chipped tooth can look odd, especially when you are speaking or smiling.

Veneers can be used to rebuild your teeth and restore their full appearance.

  • People With Multiple Issues

For many patients, improving their smiles involve fixing more than one problem. Whether you have yellow teeth with a gap in the middle or chipped teeth that are crowded together, veneers may be the fastest way to alter the appearance of your smile.
