Comfortable Dental Care Is Possible

  • August 8, 2016

Dental anxiety affects millions of people across the United States. The reasons for this anxiety can vary from person to person, but one of the most common causes of dental anxiety is pain.

Or rather, it’s fear that dental care will be painful.

In spite of how Steve Martin portrayed a dentist in Little Shop of Horrors, dentists do not go into this profession to hurt people.

In fact, our staff strives to provide pain-free dental care to our patients at Forever Young Dentistry. Our goal is to make your dental care as comfortable as we can, whether you are visiting us for a routine cleaning or for a more complicated procedure.

If you live in Sterling Heights, Troy, or another nearby Michigan community, our dentist has taken steps to reduce pain as much as possible.

Pain-Free Injections

We consider our office to be a comprehensive dental practice. In addition to providing general and family dentistry, we also perform cosmetic and restorative procedures.

In modern dental care, we have a variety of ways we can treat our patients, and our staff have been trained to use new techniques and technology to make this as painless as we can.

A great example is this the buffered local anesthetic technique.

You are likely already aware that local anesthetic is used to numb the parts of your mouth where we may be performing a particular treatment. The anesthetic prevents you from feeling any pain during that procedure.

For some people, receiving the anesthetic is part of the problem. It’s not that they are opposed to being numb. It’s because they really don’t like — and may even be afraid of — needles.

How does the buffered local anesthetic technique help?

Many of us have received shots at the doctor’s office, and the nurse or doctor will often warn that the shot might “sting” a little.

The buffering technique makes injections virtually painless. It also can help speed up the effects of the anesthetic, which means less time waiting for the medicine to take effect. This allows you to spend less time in the dentist’s chair.

In the months since we have introduced this technique to our practice, several patients have been amazed at how this has improved their experience.

Sedation Dentistry

We have also learned that some patients are going to be uncomfortable if they even see a needle. An innovative technique like we described above probably won’t change how they feel.

For those patients, we have a completely other method of helping you feel comfortable and relaxed. It’s called sedation dentistry, and we have two ways we can use it to help you.

The first approach is nitrous oxide. Many people know this as laughing gas.

When it’s inhaled, nitrous oxide creates a sense of euphoria (which is part of how it got its nickname). More important for you, it also has an analgesic effect.

Instead of making pain go away, breathing nitrous oxide will help you feel so relaxed that you don’t feel any pain throughout your treatment. You will remain calm and comfortable simply by breathing the gas through a mask.

One of the reasons we like nitrous oxide is that it wears off quickly, too. When we remove the gas, you will exhale any of the nitrous oxide left in your system. Within minutes, you will be feeling like yourself again.

The other form of dental sedation that we offer is oral sedation. This is as simple as swallowing a pill prior to your appointment.

We want to stress that the safety of our patients is extremely important to us. This is why you must make arrangements for someone else to drive you to and from our office if you choose to receive oral sedation.

The effects are similar to nitrous oxide. You will remain relaxed, and you won’t feel any pain.

The difference is that oral sedation can last for hours, which mean you are likely to continue feeling those effects for a while after your treatment is over. You should set aside some time to rest after you get home with this kind of sedation dentistry.
