Dr. Young has pointed out that traditional dentures aren’t really replacements for lost teeth. They are an alternative to having no teeth whatsoever.

To truly replace your teeth, you need to do be able to eat comfortably, and you should feel confident that your replacement teeth with stay where they are supposed to be.

You can get both of those benefits with implant-supported dentures at Forever Young Dentistry. If you have any questions about this restorative service, call us today.

What Are You Really Getting With Dentures?

When you first get traditional dentures, they can seem like a godsend.

If you lived for any amount of time without teeth, you learned that is was incredibly difficult to chew anything. You may have lived on soup, mashed potatoes, and other soft foods for a short time, but that probably got only pretty quick.

Having dentures meant you could eat more things than you had been eating, even if that wasn’t necessarily the same as eating all the foods that you wanted to eat.

Dr. Young knows from his training and his experience that having traditional dentures will only restore about 20 percent of your original bite force. Can you eat foods with that force? Sure, but it may take more effort than you realize.

Traditional dentures are not anchored in place. Real teeth are held in your jaw by their roots. This also helps them generate the power to easily bite into and chew up nearly any food that you would want to eat.

You could use an adhesive to help hold your teeth in place, but that can interfere with the taste of your food. Plus the adhesive wears off so that is not a permanent solution for your dentures.

Without getting too deep into the science behind it, you will lose bone mass in your jaw if you only have traditional dentures. Over time, the shape of your mouth will change to coincide with the changes in your jaw. That means your dentures will not fit as well, and eventually, you will need to have them refitted or replaced.

Some people need to have new dentures every three years. If you’d rather get a new set of dentures once, then you should schedule a consultation at Forever Young Dentistry to discuss our implant-supported dentures.

What Implants Can Do For You, Your Dentures

Dental implants replace your roots in multiple ways. They can serve as anchors to hold your dentures firmly in place.

You won’t have to worry about your “teeth” slipping out of place when you take a bite after you get implant-supported dentures. You may not regain 100 percent of your original bite force, but you will restore enough power in your bite that you won’t notice much of a difference.

Knowing this is why Dr. Young considered implant-supported dentures the first choice of all our patients who are missing one or both rows of teeth.

Another important benefit of having properly placed implants is that they will interact with your jawbone similarly to how your roots once did. This will help you sustain your jaw’s shape and size, which means you won’t have to replace or refit your dentures like you will with traditional dentures.
