Don’t Let a Dental Emergency Disrupt Your Plans

Preparing for a Dental Emergency

Be aware of your dental office hours and the emergency services they provide. Do they have someone on call to handle anything that might occur during the night or on weekends?

Carry that information with you at all times. Post it conspicuously at home so that caregivers have it readily available. And make sure that your dentist is aware that your loved one is in someone else’s care and they have the authority to seek treatment on their behalf.

Learn a little bit about what constitutes a dental emergency and steps you can take to deal with one. For example, a tooth that has been knocked out may be able to be reimplanted if the correct action is taken and help is sought in a timely fashion. If possible, replace the tooth in the socket or place in a glass of milk or a Save-A-Tooth solution and seek help from your dentist immediately.

A small cut in the mouth can bleed profusely. A clean cloth or cotton held over a wound should blanch bleeding; additional help should be sought, if necessary.

Pain is an indicator that there is a problem. Don’t ignore it hoping it will go away. Get in front of it as soon as you can. Call your dentist and give a thorough explanation of exactly what is going on and how long it has been bothering you. Then follow instructions provided.

Dealing with An Emergency When Away from Home

Whether you’re on vacation, away for business, or enroute to or from a trip, the inconvenience and discomfort of a dental emergency can wreak havoc. The first step is to call your dentist. A simple solution may be available until treatment can be rendered.

When visiting family or friends, their dentist may be able to assist you.

If none of those options are available, the local chamber of commerce is a good resource. If out of the country, reach out to your embassy for assistance.

A dental emergency does not have to ruin your day. Preparation and a little knowledge are key components to expeditiously and correctly handling the situation.
