Healthy Habits to Care for Teeth and Gums

Brushing – The act of brushing is important, but the correct tools and technique will help assure teeth are clean. A soft bristle toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste combined with brushing at least two minutes twice a day are essential.

Your family dentist may recommend an electric toothbrush; the rapid action of the brush head does most of the work … you simply guide the brush to reach the front, top, and back of all teeth. A circular motion covering a few teeth at a time works best. Never apply excessive pressure or employ a back and forth sawing motion – this can damage enamel and result in premature gum erosion.

Flossing – You may not realize it, but brushing only reaches about two thirds of the surfaces of teeth. Flossing is needed to remove what your toothbrush can’t reach; floss teeth once a day.

Dental Visits – During your teeth cleaning visit, harmful dental plaque that has formed on teeth since your last dental visit is removed. Plaque build-up contributes to dental decay and the possibility of developing gum disease. In addition to being cleaned and topical stain removed, teeth are polished to look their best.

Dental x-rays provide a means to check for problems such as hairline fractures or decay that is forming … correcting these types of problems before they have a chance to escalate can save you time and money in the long run.

Finally, a dental exam will be performed. During this exam, abnormalities can be noted, and if serious can be treated. An exam like this can save lives.

Teeth Straightening

Having a great smile is important; however, correcting a malocclusion with teeth straightening will help allow you to keep all teeth as clean as possible. Crooked teeth may lead to places where plaque can build by creating pockets that are difficult to reach with daily care.

Finally, follow those instructions issued by your family dentist. They are intended to enhance your oral health as well as provide a great smile.
