Dr. Young on bite guards

The bite and joint are very important to me. That's something that I pride myself in being able to diagnosis and take care of. We have patients that have headaches, clenching their teeth, grinding their teeth. I'm very well educated in how to handle that. The first thing is a proper diagnosis. Unfortunately, there's a lot of things that can cause problems in the joints. It's not always related to teeth. We want to try to figure that out first. In a very short amount of time, less than 20 minutes, I can make a bite guard appliance to help us diagnosis. This appliance will often immediately relieve symptoms and reduce headaches. From that point we can get a diagnosis. What's happening? Is this related to the teeth and how they fit together or is it another medical issue where we would need to refer you to a medical professional?

If you’ve ever had a migraine headache, you know that they are no joke. When you suffer from migraines, everything stops and caters to the great pain you are feeling in your head. It is a debilitating condition, and it can prevent you from living the life you want to live without it being interrupted by intense migraine headaches. At Forever Young Dentistry, we know how debilitating a migraine can be, and that is why we offer ways to put an end to migraines so you can go on with your life in peace.

Dr. Young on treating headaches and migraines

There's so many reasons for headaches and migraines that may not have anything to do with the teeth, but I find that a certain number of these conditions are related to neck and joint and how the teeth fit together. If we can make that diagnosis, that the teach are involved, we can generally correct that in many people.

I have had patients with chronic headaches. We will make them a very simple appliance that they can wear twenty-hours a day initially to help relieve pain, and their headaches will go away. Sometimes it's nothing to do with the teeth, and we can't necessarily help those people. We have a very deficient way of determining very quickly and a quick way to handle those problems. People have commented to me that their headaches go away. It's almost like a miracle.

There are numerous causes that lead to migraine headaches, and if you are suffering from these, you should seek treatment at Forever Young Dentistry as soon as possible. There are many things that can trigger migraines, and some of those include:

  • Problems with your jaw joint. If you grind your teeth or clench your jaw, you are susceptible to migraines. You can have these things treated at Forever Young Dentistry by wearing a bite guard, wearing a Kois deprogrammer, or by having drug therapy.
  • The types of foods and drinks you consume. If you consume foods and drinks that contain artificial sweeteners, caffeine, or certain preservatives, you may become prone to developing migraines.
  • Stress. Stress can cause a whole lot of problems in your body, and migraines are one of those problems. Trying to keep your stress level lower can do a lot for reducing your migraine headaches.
  • Changes in your sleep pattern. If you aren’t getting the proper amount of sleep, you may develop migraines.
  • Physical activity. Too much physical activity that you are not prepared for will lead to intense migraines that can only be stopped by curbing your activity.
  • Medications that you are taking. Certain medications have different effects on different people. If you develop migraines shortly after you’ve begun taking a new medication, the medication is more than likely what is causing your migraine.

Sleep Apnea Solutions At Forever Young Dentistry

As mentioned earlier, changes in your sleep pattern can contribute to migraine headaches, and sleep apnea is a condition that wreaks havoc on your sleep pattern. Typically, when you come into Forever Young Dentistry to have your sleep apnea treated, you will already have had a sleep study to determine your sleep patterns.

We will use that study to determine how we should treat your sleep apnea. Oftentimes, patients that come into see us are already using the CPAP machine to treat their sleep apnea and have a strong dislike for it. If this is the case, Dr. Young and his staff work hard to find another treatment that will put an end to your sleep apnea and hopefully your migraine headaches. Usually, this is in the form of an oral appliance worn while you’re sleeping.
